YouTube Kids App Review

I received a YouTube Kids intro pack to facilitate this review.  All opinions are 100% my own.

As the sons of Techmomogy, my boys have enjoyed various gadgets and gizmos and often know how to work them better than their grandparents!  When it comes to apps, they know what they like and go back to the same ones over and over.  Currently though, they are obsessed with the new YouTube Kids app!

My boys love exploring the YouTube Kids apps and I’m happy to let them.  Kids can search by scrolling left and right or using the icons at the top of the screen for Recommended, Shows, Music, Learning, and Explore.  There’s also a search function that can be left on or turned off to restrict the content to what’s on the home screen.

Beyond turning off the search function, parents can also set a timer on the app (after which the app will “lock”), turn off the background music and sound effects, and reset the watch history.  An icon of a lock is in the bottom right of the home screen and when touched, a “Grown-Ups Only!” screen slides out from the right with a new pin each time.  The pin is 4 numbers all spelled out and there’s a keypad underneath for adults to enter the numbers.  Pretty clever as long as your child isn’t reading yet.

I love that my kids have access to channels but can’t subscribe or access comments.  The interface is simple with limited options so your kids can control it easily.  From episodes of their favorite shows to animated songs, and even videos showcasing “surprise” eggs, the YouTube Kids app has a ton of kid friendly content to offer.

YouTube Kids is available on both iOS and Android.
