My love affair with Google and the Android OS started with Gmail and immediately continued with Google Calendar. Well before Android phones, I loved the idea of being able to keep all my appointments and events on a web based calendar. And now with my Android cell, integration with my Google calendar is SO simple and SO easy and I get to take it with me!
But it’s not just my calendar anymore. You can share your calendar with whoever you want. So for those relationships where you do want your significant other to know where you are (or in a lot of cases, where they should be), this feature is a major convenience.
The widgets I’m recommending to use for this are different only because I very much prefer my HTC EVO‘s native calendar app. So for all the HTC Android phone owners out there, to get your agenda widget up and running on one of your home screens, press and hold the screen where you would like to add the widget (hopefully you know this step already). Click “Widgets” and scroll down to the HTC calendar. When given the options, select the Agenda style and you’re finished!
An app I’m loving for other Android phone owners who do not like their native calendar app (or don’t have a calendar app with an agenda widget) is Jorte. With the style of a physical personal organizer and tons of widget options AND integration with Google calendar and Google tasks…well, this app is a sure winner! After installing on your phone, follow the steps listed above for the HTC calendar widget and pick out an agenda widget for your home screen; there are many sizes to choose from.
The following steps will get you up and running both on Google Calendar and your Android phone:
- Go to Google Calendar and select Calendar Settings
- Under Calendars tab go to Sharing -> Edit Settings
- Then add person with their gmail email address and set their permission settings -> Save
- On your phone using Jorte – Open Jorte, then press menu for the Administration settings (for HTC users: Open calendar –> Press Menu –> More –> Calendars)
- Click “Select Calendar” and choose Google calendar (HTC users: you will already be able to pick your calendars to sync)
- Go back to Administration settings and click “Settings” -> Scroll down to “Choose Calendars” and you should be able to select which of your calendar (including shared ones) to sync within Jorte. (This should be similar to other calendar apps as well)
Jorte Bonus: I’m using the Tasks widget for my To Do List.
