Safety is always going to be a parent’s top concern when it comes to their kids, but what if you aren’t aware of the threat of danger?  If you’ve never heard of lock bumping, you aren’t alone.  Lock bumping involves someone making a “bump key” that doesn’t fit any specific lock but can then be hit on the head and open more than 90% of the locks it’s used on.  Watch the video below for more information.

What can you do about this?  You can research a new lock that doesn’t allow lock bumping.  An even better solution?  Get to know the new smart lock called HAVEN.  HAVEN is a smart lock focused on prevention. What makes it unique from any other lock is that its anchored at the strongest part of the door: inside at the base.  HAVEN will have all the connectivity expected from a smart lock, including auto unlock for those times when you get to the door and your hands are full.

Right now, the HAVEN team has launched a Kickstarter campaign in an effort to rally support.  Help spread the word so we can bring this great product into our homes and give ourselves the peace of mind we should have every day and night.  Also stay tuned for a possible review from Techmomogy!

Alex and I (Clay) had multiple break-ins in our neighborhood, and with young families we were motivated to replace an aging piece of security technology–the deadbolt. With the rise of additive manufacturing and 3D printing we found that anyone with the desire and know how could print someone’s key and gain access to their home. Couple that with lock bumping and brute force entry and you have a problem set that could be solved by subtracting the deadbolt from the scenario chain. We built this because we knew there had to be a better way to use technology to protect our families and we didn’t want to be a victim of the next break-in.

WHO ARE THE FOUNDERS?
The founders are Alex Bertelli and Clay Banks. Alex spent the past 8 years as a special operations aviator deployed around the world with the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment; the same unit responsible for numerous high profile rescues and direct action missions. Alex has since left the active army and works under the Governor of the State of TN in the economic development cabinet as a business development expert in the Aerospace and Defense sectors. Clay Banks is a serial entrepreneur who has run and created several startups. Clay also currently works under the Governor in the economic development cabinet creating jobs for Tennesseans.

When Alex was serving as an army aviator in Iraq he recognized that the most important buildings were fortified by simple steel gates or even electronically activated pylon barriers. He had an idea for a home friendly version and after some initial research, concept sketches and customer validation, they formed a team around the concept and created HAVEN. The prototype was validated in recent strength tests and a clean patent was filed with the US PTO for a device that has no competition in this particular space of security devices.

HAVEN is flipping the design of a smart lock on its head. While many companies are making locks digitally connected, the industry has no serious solution for preventing break-ins from locking bumping, brute force entry or the use of 3D printed keys. Our product solves all of these problems by focusing on prevention and taking the lock off of the door and placing it at the threshold. HAVEN will still have the same digitally connected functionality as our competitors, but our primary focus is using technology to prevent break-ins by securing the door at its strongest point — the base of the door.

04_HAVEN_Stepping Over photoHOW IS HAVEN DIFFERENT?
Our competitors are focused on converting traditional deadbolts into smart locks, but with the rise of break-ins that doesn’t make the lock any safer. We are setting ourselves apart by creating a stronger smarter solution. Placing the lock at the bottom of the door will prevent, protect and delay entry into someone’s home by using the strength of the foundation. HAVEN avoids the weak deadbolt strike plate for a credit swipe, avoids the pitfalls of 3D printed keys, and prevents a burglar from smashing in to the door. Like our competitors, we will achieve the same ease of use and connectivity through lock sharing and digital access but our differentiator lies in the fact that HAVEN secures the door shut at the home’s strongest point.
