DIY Burlap Wreath How-To | Techmomogy @ Home

I have been in love with the current burlap bubble wreaths I’ve been seeing all over Etsy since last year.  But I just didn’t have the money to purchase one (let alone one for every season) with everything we had going on.  I enlisted my mom’s help for a Spring/Summer one where we used a styrofoam wreath and wrapped it in burlap then made loops on the top half only using pins and some gorgeous natural, white and aqua burlap ribbon.

But I still wanted a full burlap wreath I could make myself for Fall and eventually Christmas.  So I found many different tutorials to get an idea on materials and how to create the wreath and while there are a few methods, it’s very easy to do!  I’m writing a How-To guide for newbies like myself.  It took me under an hour to complete a 12″ wreath.  I used to following materials (those are affiliate links):

12″ Wire Wreath Frame
10 yards of 5″ wide burlap ribbon
10 yards of 1.5″ orange burlap ribbon

I wanted to keep this wreath simple so even though I also ordered a net ribbon, I left it out of the end product.

Step 1:

Tie the end of each ribbon to the back of the wire wreath frame.  I had initially only tied the 5″ ribbon and made a few loops before realizing I forgot about the orange ribbon.  So tie them both on at the same time and don’t worry about the way the back looks, it will be a little messy but no one sees it!

Step 2:

Take the 5″ ribbon and loop it through one of the sections of the frame making sure to keep the rest of the ribbon spool under the wreath at all times.  You can twist it in the back to help it feel more secure but once the loops start bunching together, you’ll see it doesn’t need a lot of twisting if any.  I started with a loop in each of the 3 sections before I made a loop with the orange ribbon.  Just pick one section at random and then continue with your 5″ ribbon.  Then pick a different section for the next orange loop.

Step 3:

This part is completely subjective.  Keep looping and twisting through the sections and make them as tight or loose as you want.  I made mine really tight and bunched together so that by the time I came to the end, I just cut the last loop and it was securely snug between all the material and the frame.  If you make a looser wreath, it would be useful to also purchase wire with your materials to help you secure some of your loops, especially the last one.

That’s it!  Really, I couldn’t believe how simple it was.  I will probably get a few more ribbons in there for my Christmas version and my mom (who is a ribbon master) is helping me add an orange bow to this wreath, but otherwise, I am completely happy with my simple DIY fall burlap wreath.
